Courtyard Design and Planting Strategy

At Sparrow Farm in Feltham, Archway Green were tasked with creating an attractive and low-maintenance courtyard for a new apartment complex. The aim was to deliver a space that supports wellbeing, offering residents the benefits of spending time outdoors within a shared environment.

The design centres around gently curving pathways, forming an elegant feature that guides movement through the space. Surrounding beds, borders and seating areas are arranged to follow these lines, creating a cohesive layout. High-quality turf was carefully installed to meet the curves of the paths precisely, giving a clean and well-defined finish while ensuring the lawn areas establish quickly and remain in good condition over time.

A layered planting approach was used to add depth and interest. Betula utilis subsp. jacquemontii ‘Grayswood Ghost’ provides height and structure, with its striking white bark and seasonal colour. Fatsia japonica was introduced along the front wall, offering bold evergreen foliage and autumn flowers followed by dark fruits. Lower-level planting such as Juniperus communis ‘Green Carpet’, alongside climbers like Trachelospermum jasminoides, helps create a rich mix of textures and forms throughout the courtyard.

A Shared Space Designed for Everyday Use

Each element was selected to create a balanced and welcoming environment that supports both individual relaxation and community interaction. The combination of pathways, seating and varied planting encourages residents to use the space in different ways, whether for quiet time or socialising.

The result is a refined and peaceful courtyard that enhances the apartment setting. The mix of planting heights and seasonal interest creates a dynamic yet controlled landscape, while the clear layout ensures the space remains easy to use and maintain. As the planting matures, the courtyard will continue to develop, offering a lasting and enjoyable outdoor area for residents.
